Complete protein for vegans: pairing made simple

Beans are low in methionine; grains are low in lysine. Put them together across the day and you have a complete protein.

A “complete” protein supplies all nine essential amino acids in the proportions your body needs. Most animal proteins and soy are complete. Many other plant proteins are “limited” by one amino acid — but the gaps are predictable and easy to fill.

The two big gaps

  • Legumes (beans, lentils, chickpeas) are rich in lysine but limited in methionine.
  • Grains, nuts and seeds are rich in methionine but limited in lysine.

Combine the two and each fills the other’s gap. You don’t need to pair them in the same bite — getting both across the day works.

Easy complete-protein pairings

  • Rice + black beans
  • Hummus + whole-wheat pita
  • Lentil soup + bread
  • Peanut butter on whole-grain toast
  • Tofu or tempeh stir-fry with rice (soy is already complete)

Plant proteins are also slightly less digestible, so many experts suggest vegans aim for roughly 10–20% more protein than omnivores. Try the ProteinMD Meal Builder — it flags limiting amino acids and tells you when a meal is complete.
